Tempered or toughened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass.
Where is toughened glass most commonly used?
Toughened glass is commonly used for worktops, table tops, shower screens, glass shelves, for kitchen splashbacks (behind the hob), internal partition walls, balustrades and glass floors.
How can I tell if a glass product is made of toughened glass?
You should be able to identify toughened glass by its toughening mark or British/European standard etched into the glass. You can expect to see BS EN 14449 on laminated glass and BS EN 12150 on toughened glass.
Is toughened glass more expensive than other glass?
Toughened glass is not always more expensive than other types of glass and it really depends on the size and spec of the glass that you need. Laminated glass tends to be more expensive and heavier than tempered glass.
